What keeps me from truly loving this album like the rest of the albums in Kanye’s discography is not the auto tune or the dark lyricism, but rather that it’s just not Kanye at his songwriting A-game. In fact, it’s my third least favorite Kanye album behind JESUS IS KING and Donda 2. Unlike the other Kanye West album that received positive critical reception but mixed audience reception, I’ve never been able to love this album. on RYM - and the Cocteau Twins are a band with one of the most memorable collection of song titles. Treasure is no., Heaven or Las Vegas is no. Less cerebral, it still shimmers and glistens and repeated listens unlocked the quality of this album. That said, the more earthly approach on this album, with Simon Raymonde prominent and Liz Fraser's vocals clearer and some way decipherable, is more allied to the start of the 90s. Then listening to Heaven or Las Vegas and being left a little disappointed it lacked the same otherworldly gravitas. I remember listening to Treasure for the first time and being blown away by it. I prefer the beatbox aesthetic of his debut, Radio. The album's crossover appeal in places falls a little flat. However, I don't think the album's length nor tracks 2 and 3 help its cause - for me, Around the Way Girl and Eat Em Up L Chill are two poor songs placed prominently. The title track may be the most recognisable, my favourite is Murdergram. Also delivered well, LL is a capable lyricist and vocalist. Hip-hop done well, avoiding the tropes of some of his peers and successors. It is a pleasant album, Sade is a cultured vocalist, but overall it is quite soporific when heard as an album rather than its individual parts. By the second half of the album I felt I'd heard all I was going to get. I really like No Ordinary Love and there was a pleasing amount of low-end on Feel No Pain, particularly for a mainstream pop album.
